about

Dragón Conchado refers to a mythical deity of creation that appears in many pre-Columbian coastal and Andean cultures associated with the conch shell trumpet. Usually portrayed as a hybrid creature coming out of a conch shell and binding many beings from mollusks to birds and jaguars. The piece for stones, shells, conch shell trumpet, and electronics, situates the deity in the contemporary climate, where layers of sound articulate a complex of predation with small creatures such as birds and cicadas, human-made tools in construction sites, and airplanes, along with earthly forces such as waves and wind. The Dragón Conchado, mobilizing stones and drones emerges howling in a challenging environment, with vibrations and roars as modes of incorporation of its ecosystem. Recorded outdoors in San Isidro, Lima and Governors Island, New York, 2019.

Instruments: Stones and shells from the Pacific and Atlantic coast, bells, chime made from recycled beach trash, ribbon microphone and mixer, voice, conch shell trumpet.

Canto Villano senses among makeshift amplification systems ~channeling roving waves that choke and flow amid densities through found objects ~sounding leaks of vibration as the aural emerges as a residue of the tactile.
