about
Dando Tumbos is a modular sculpture made of speakers, contact microphones, shells and stones collected on the southern Pacific coast. The speakers reproduced the soundscape composition here available, Dando Tumbos (Sin Palabras), based on a poem by Blanca Varela published in her last book Concierto Animal. In it, Varela facilitates, through verse and silence, a sonic ecosystem. Taking this perspective as a starting point, various sonification methods of one same poem constitute a composition filtered by stones and speakers in a chain of assemblages.
In the wall there is a graphic score, which serves as an interpretation guide. The composition, comprising music and field recordings, was recorded in various sessions in Lima and New York.
It was installed on February of 2019 for the exhibition 'Hablar Piedras' in Espacio Espositivo, in Madrid.
lyrics
Blanca Varela:
Esta mañana soy otra
Toda la noche
El viento me dio alas
Para caer
La sin sombra
La muerte
Como una mala madre
Me tocó bajo los ojos
Entonces dividida
Dando tumbos
De lo oscuro a lo oscuro
Gire recién llegada
A la luz de esta línea
En pleno abismo
Abriéndose
Y cerrándose la línea
Sin música
Pero llamando
Sin voz
Pero llamando
Sin palabras
Llamando
My translation:
In it this morning I am another
Throughout it at night
The wind gave me wings
For a fall
She without
Shadow, death
Just like a bad mother
Touched me under the eyes
And so, divided
Over and coming
From the darkness to the darkness
I rolled up tenderfoot
To the light of this line
In full abyss
Opening
And closing the line
Past music
But calling
Past voice
But calling
Lest the words
Calling

Canto Villano senses among makeshift amplification systems ~channeling roving waves that choke and flow amid densities through found objects ~sounding leaks of vibration as the aural emerges as a residue of the tactile.

The ambient composer creates pieces reminiscent of short stories by Breece D’J Pancake, assembling familiar sounds in ways that render them haunted and suddenly unfamiliar. Bandcamp Album of the Day Nov 8, 2023
